Never Too Young, Never Too Old
When should my child begin lessons?
Kids can start as young as 4 as long as their hand can reach the head of the
guitar, their fingers can grip around the neck, and, most importantly, they have the
desire to learn. Their own excitement (not the parent’s!) will keep them practicing
and enjoying themselves.
Old dog, new tricks
The other common question is: “Am I too old?” The simple answer is “No!!” As
with children, the most important factor is a desire to learn. If you can make the
time and have the passion then it’s never too late; plus, playing the guitar can be
a great way to unwind after a long, hard day at work.
Learning Should Be Fun
One of my goals as an instructor is to help my students realize that music is a fun
world to be in. I try to teach them to listen to music in a new way, to go beyond
what they think they know about music theory to a place where they can feel the
music in their body. We create that positive experience by giving students the
chance to learn about the type of music that resonates with them, and by striving
to find a balance between feeling challenged and having success. Whether you’
re a beginner or a seasoned player there’s always room for improvement and the
potential for discovering new techniques.
I like to encourage students to view “having to practice” instead as an “opportunity
to play.” Whether it’s a one-on-one session or a group... whether you’re a 10 year
old or a 60-something child, some of the best learning comes out of the fun of
just playing, experimenting and trying. I began playing the guitar because I
enjoyed it, and it is my love of the instrument, more than anything else, that has
kept me at it for all of these years.
